Bethune Road - dockless cycle hire

Background to this consultation

The Council is committed to increasing active and sustainable travel to help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. In Summer 2022 the Council entered into an agreement with Lime UK to operate a cycle hire service in the borough aimed at supporting people who don’t own a bike to cycle around the borough.

To help keep footways clear for other road users, the Council is creating a network of cycle hire parking bays in the borough which Lime bike users are required to end their journeys in.

Bethune Road

The Council is proposing to introduce a number of cycle hire parking bays at a number of locations, including Bethune Road, 13.2m south of the southern building line of 147 Bethune Road, replacing 11.1m of permit holder bay on the western kerb line. This site has been selected in response to data showing a demand for cycle hire parking.

All bays meet our siting design criteria to ensure that they are visible, accessible, generally overlooked and well lit. If the decision is made to proceed with the proposal, the Council will aim to begin with these minor works approximately one to two months following the end of the consultation period. The works would include the installation of traffic signs, permanent road markings and reflective bollards at each location to indicate the change of use to a cycle hire bay.

A 21-day statutory consultation period will commence on 18 April 2025 and close on 9 May 2025, after which the Council will then consider responses before making a decision to proceed with the proposals, make amendments or uphold any concerns. Subject to the consultation, the Council will aim to proceed with these works in March 2025.
